Carol Tamminga is a Professor of Psychiatry and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. She earned a Bachelor of Science from Calvin College, received her MD from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, and completed her residency in Psychiatry at the University of Chicago.

Her career has focused on the study of serious mental illness, particularly psychosis, suicidal behavior, and cognitive dysfunction. Her research emphasizes the identification of informative biomarkers that can predict clinical outcomes, as well as the development of laboratory model systems to better understand the mechanisms and progression of these illnesses and their individual manifestations.

Tamminga’s research has been supported by NIH grants for more than 40 years. She has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine and has served as President of Biological Psychiatry and President of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology. She is also a recipient of the Gold Medal Award from Biological Psychiatry. She has published three books and more than 600 scientific articles and chapters.
